is a trained companion and member of the birth team who supports a birthing person through their live birth in a setting of their choosing, such as a hospital, birthing center, or a home birth. A trained doula supports the mother, or birthing person, by assisting her in creating a birth plan and implementing it in a hospital or birth center setting.
A doula's goal is to empower the mother to have the birth experience she chooses. Doula's provide emotional and physical support by using comfort techniques during labor and providing education about childbirth, breastfeeding, and caesarean care.
Doulas also provide support to the client's partner, family, and friends and help the mother with beginning postnatal care. The doula's role is to help the client feel safe and comfortable. Doula's complement the role of the healthcare professionals who provide the client's medical care.
Erin Cotter is a practicing doula and midwife's apprentice in Ogden, Utah. She provides birth doula services for northern Utah, including Davis, Weber and Salt Lake Counties. She is also a student at Renaissance College of Massage in Bountiful and will graduate in 2021. Covid-19 Information: Due to Covid-19 some hospitals are only allowing one support person to accompany a birthing person at the hospital. Hospital policies vary depending on the hospital and some view doula's as essential workers. Therefore, the earlier you begin making plans for your birth team and planning which hospital you'll deliver at the better. Please contact me as soon as possible to schedule a consultation.
There are still a VARIETY of options available to you during the COVID-19 for hosipitals and birth centers. I would be happy to discuss your specific situation with you and how we can work together to create a birth plan and doula service that will best fit your needs.
Virtual Doula Services: If you choose to use virtual doula services due to the restrictions at your hospital, an extra support session will be provided before you begin labor to assist your partner in learning comfort measures which you can use in person at the hospital along with Virtual doula services. In addition, you may call and labor with doula services in person during early labor prior to going to the hospital. You may also recieve additional support in recovery at home if you choose.
